One of the best ways that parents can help their teenagechildren prepare for adult life is to encourage them to take a part-time job.
In the statement, it claims that having a part-time job willhelp teenagers better prepared for adult life, therefore parents shouldencourage their children to take part-time job. While I understand some of thebenefits of student having part-time experience as claimed in the statement, Ialso find some disadvantages for student to take part-time job. Therefore, thisessay will examine both advantages and disadvantages of student havingpart-time job and will conclude this discussion in the end.
Some advantages of having part-time job experience are thatstudent can get useful skills from their hands-on work experience and earnmoney to support their leisure spending. Part-time job, no matter it is waitress in restaurant or general helper in office, will always give teenagers some goodinsight of what the workplace is like. For example, in the restaurant teenagerswill have opportunity to have a close observation of how to greet customers andtake customers’ orders with proper manner. Great customer service is based onoutstanding communication skill. By working as a waitress, student will acquiresome useful soft skills that are transferable into other skills that will behelpful for their future career. On the other hand, by taking part-time job, teenagers will be able to support themselves in their leisure spending such asvideo games, and even can cover some of their educational spending such astextbooks or notebooks. This will give teenagers flexibility to manage theirearnings and help them to develop a good understanding of budgeting, which willbe essential for their adult life.
Some disadvantages of student taking part-time job are alsoobvious. Because of money incentive, some students might go extreme withpart-time jobs. I heard once from my friends that she was taking threepart-time jobs at once just so that she can save money to buy herself a PS3.Overloaded part-time works had taken up her so much time and in some occasions shehad to ditch her classes for work. This resulted in a terrible grade on hertranscript by the end of the semester and she had to retake many of her classesin the following semester. This is an example that can illustrate what I thinkas a disadvantage of student taking part-time job. Spending too much time onworking will adverse student’s studying at school and thus will have a huge negativeimpact on their future if they are pursuing university study after theygraduate. Their bachelor degree to some extend will also affect their futurecareer choices. There is a chain reaction can be seen from this problem. On theother hand, skills learned from some part-time jobs might not really benefitthe student. For example, a student who decided to go for a study in computerscience in his future might not find part-time job of cleaning bathroom willbenefit him in any way.
In conclusion, thereare some advantages and disadvantages associated with taking part-time jobs forteenagers. Sometime this will benefit them to have a better preparation ofadult life but sometime not. To ensure student will truly benefit from theirpart-time job experience, parents should pay close attention on helping theirchildren to determine what job they can take without affecting their study andwhat job will indeed function well for their future career purpose.
