Hi there! I think I can help you with these questions. For LORs, it is always better to have people who actually know you write them. Given this, the more your recommenders know you, the better off you are. The recommend doesn’t necessarily have to have known you for a long time. He or she can write the letter based on some specific events or activities. On the academic side, a professor who knows you longer will be more qualified to write about you. And, yes, it is better to have recommenders write the letters themselves so they come from different perspectives.
