The internship is a great opportunity to practically applythe skills and knowledge that you have learned in the classroom for the firstyear of the MBA program. It is also a great opportunity to build and expand on those skills.

Another aspect is that an internship allows you to gainexposure to a career and an industry you may not have experience with before,and it can help onedetermine if it is something you truly are interested in and want to pursue.

For many of us, we come into the MBA as a “careerswitcher." An internship affords you the opportunity to practicallyshowcase the skills and knowledge that you’ve gain from your previous workexperience and demonstrate to an employer how those skills are transferrable tothat particular job or industry.

From my experience, companies are more likely to give individuals an opportunity and hire them for an internship that may or may nothave traditional, applicable experience than if you were trying to apply for afull-time position with the same background.

One way I’ve always looked at the summer internship, is that it is basically a twoway interview for you and for the employer to see if the company and theposition are a good fit for both of you. Many students receive full-time offersfrom the company they intern with soon after the summer internship ends.

Reaching out to different people from your alumni network that are with companies or incareers that you are interested in can be a great avenue to learn more aboutwhat types of internships are available for MBA students and how one goes aboutthe application and interview process. The more you know about what isout there and what is available, the better prepared you will be in trying toland a position in the career you are pursuing.
