问题是画线句后面的'when they'的指代是不是有问题啊，所以我会去选B选项，‘rivals'复数形式。

between 和and 搭配吧
they指代这两个人

谢谢。原来', when'可以直接指代前面的between...and的两个人。我一直以为需要指代前面句子中的主语
