The University of Southern California Marshall School of Business Master of Science in Finance program begins May 27, 2014. It includes 4 courses in Summer, 4 in Fall, and 4 in Spring. You must apply for entry in the Summer, 2014 term, not Fall 2014. If you look under Fall, 2014 the program is not listed--because that is not when students begin the program. It is listed under programs that have students beginning in Summer, 2014.
The deadline to have a completed application with all supporting documents for our first round of admissions is December 1, 2013. If your application package is not complete by December 1, your application would be rolled over to the next round. We do read and review applications from the second and third rounds. The deadline for the second round (for having a completed application) is February 1, 2014. The deadline for the third round is March 15, 2014. You apply only once, not three times. The round you are in will depend on how quickly you complete all parts of the application package.
All students would begin classes in Los Angeles on May 27, 2014, which is the start of our Summer term. That term is used to teach fundamentals courses which will be helpful in the remainder of the program. Please look at the Sample Program, which is part of the brochure, which you may download from the website www.marshall.usc.edu/msf
We rely on the same faculty who teach in our MBA and Ph.D. programs, so we have to schedule the fundamentals courses in the Summer term to avoid having schedule conflicts with the other programs. Starting in May allows students to complete the program in one calendar year and graduate the following May.
You may apply if your coursework is finished by May 27, 2014, including Final Exams, even if you have not yet received your degree or graduation certificate. You must enter on May 27, 2014, no later. If you have a conflict, please apply the following year for entry in May 2015.
While USC has not yet set tuition for 2014, we estimate that it will be $50,000, plus $2,000 for books.
This is assuming completion in a year. Taking longer than that is of course possible, certainly if you have health issues, but we encourage most students to finish in a year. In part this is because we believe that you benefit from taking most of your classes with the same cohort of students. In part it may be difficult to schedule the courses you want, since they are not available in every semester. We rely on faculty who teach in our MBA and Ph.D. programs. They may not be able to schedule the electives courses that you want or required courses that you need if you do not take them in the usual sequence.
The Sample Program on the brochure at the website shows the usual course of 12 classes taken in a year, starting in May 2014 and finishing in May 2015. If you don't think that you would be able to finish this program in the usual time, you may wish to reconsider whether this program is right for you.
Completed application packages include the Online Application, Application Fee of US$150, Essay, Optional Essay (to provide supplementary information if you wish to), One letter of reference (no more than one), transcript from your registrar (and degree certificate if you have attained one), a TOEFL or IELTS score for International students, and if you wish to submit a standardized test, a GMAT or GRE score. The GMAT or GRE is recommended, but not required.
Based on what our applicants have submitted so far, the median GMAT is 700, and the median GPA is 3.5. The distribution for the GRE is similar to the GMAT. Note that this is not a minimum required score, but what the applicant pool has been reporting to us.
International students must submit a language exam score, either TOEFL or IELTS. The minimum for TOEFL is 100, with at least 20 on each section. The minimum IELTS score is 7.0, with at least 6.5 on each section. These scores (for either TOEFL or IELTS) are required, and if you scored below this level, you would not be accepted.
Our website is www.marshall.usc.edu/msf You can link to the Online Application by clicking on Apply Now!. You create an account, are given an ID, and can complete the application over a few days, including gathering the supporting materials.
Good Luck!
