正确答案是B，楼主选的是E
lz也知道现在完成时不是正确的，但是不能理解为什么选B
请麻烦仔细解答一下

首先楼主划线似乎就划错了了吧……正确的题目应该是：
Thomas Eakins's powerful style and his choices of subject--the advances in modern surgery, the discipline of sport, the strains of individuals in tension with society or even with themselves--was as disturbing to his own time as it is compelling for ours.

先看结构，
主语：TE's powerful style and his choices of subject（明显是复数，排除单数的选项，就只剩B和E了，E选项缺少be动词，比较结构不完整，也可以排除）

再看时态，
这里明显过去完成时不对，因为没有与之相应的过去时对应；
现在完成时其实也不对，因为这样比较结构就不平衡了，一边用完成时，一边用现在时

其实不考虑时态也能选对的，明显E后面少了they are

This is a Hyphen structure, and we can simpliy cover this part and see the sentence more clearly.

We see "and" right? so A, C it out.
And we also see " ...........as.................as............. This is, of course, a parellel structure, so ..........it is..........as disturbing.............as....it is.........or they are........as distrubing......as........they are, but here "it is" is wrong, so we elinimate E, D (had been........was.........wrong)

We are happy to go with B
