Lay a good foundation. Evaluate yourown skill set prior to starting your program. It may be that your MBA programrequires certain leveling courses prior to taking advanced graduate classes inbusiness, especially if your undergraduate degree is in another discipline.However, even if they don’t consider the following:

1.Macro/microeconomics – most students find theadvanced economics required by MBA programs to be quite challenging. If you haven’t had these coursesat the undergraduate level, or it was a decade or so ago when you took them,consider refreshing your skills at the community college level prior tograduate school.

2.Statistics – the MBA is a quantitative degreeand many of the courses assume that you already know the basics of statistics. Again, if you are weak in this area, consider taking a statistics course priorto your program.

3.Writing skills – a graduate degreerequires applying knowledge rather than just acquiring knowledge. You will beexpected to write papers, proposals and research papers in graduate school. Make sure that you are familiarwith acceptable formats and brush up on your skills if need be. There isplenty of free instruction available online.

a.      Login every day to make sureassignment/project/test due dates haven’t changed. Even if you aretaking courses in person, many instructors use online tools to organize theirclasses. Do not trust yourself to remember everything – use a planner asalready mentioned.

b.      Remember to take care ofyourself physically. You are going to be under a considerable amount ofstress during this time, so you must eat well, get enough sleep (I know thatsounds impossible, but it will do more harm than good to pull “all-nighters”)and exercise as much as possible. Even desk exercises are better than nothing!

c.      Ask,ask, ask. No one is goingto hold your hand in graduate school. Be proactive about asking questions toadvisors and other support personnel regarding any issue that you areunfamiliar with. Be aware of when payments are due, the last day to dropa class is, and other academic policies such as academic standing, repeatingcourses or grading policies such as receiving an Incomplete. If you findyourself struggling in a class academically, contact your professor or teachingassistant early to get advice and help.  

d.      Don’tget overwhelmed by the big picture. In some regards, it is helpful to put blinders on – don’t worry abouthow long this degree will take you, concentrate on what is required from youthat week. Solve one problem at a time and then go on to the next.Before you know it, you will have completed a semester. Pacing yourself isextremely important. Remind yourself that the sacrifices you (and your family)are making now will pay off in the end.
