when we see" -ed" in a sentence, there must be several possibilities:
1. as a verb. (past tense)
2.as a modifier
a. modify the preceding noun (as adj.)
b. modify a verb (as adv.)

In this sentence, " it raced around the world" is a complete sentence,hence,"detect" can be a verb.
It must be a modifiers.
when use "-ed", it modifies the preceding noun "world" . That do not make sense.

here,we use "detecting", it modifiers the subject and verb - it raced.
