appoint sb sth和 apoint sb as sth有区别吗？

今天看Manhattan的Foundations of GMAT Verbal句子改错：
原句：Because she has deep relationships with the unions as other leaders have, there is an expectation of her being appointed as chairperson.
答案：Because she has deep relationships with the unions as other leaders have, it is expected that she will be appointed chairperson.

为什么appointed as chairperson要改为appointted chairperson?
我查过字典了，感觉这2中idiom没有区别啊？求指教！万分感谢！

如果不要as和要as都对，在GMAT崇尚简洁的倾向上，去掉as更好咯~
