Scientists and other researchers should focus their research on areas that are likely to benefit the greatest number of people. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the recommendation and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, describe specific circumstances in which adopting the recommendation would or would not be advantageous and explain how these examples shape your position. Despite it is necessary and conducive for scientists and reseachers to focus their research on areas that are likely to benefit the greatest number of people in the short term, other fields of researhes should be paid equally attention to bring about beneficial results while ignoring them would cause detrimental results in the long run. Admittedly, there is no denying the fact that when sufficient attention are paid on the researches on areas that are likely beneficial to the largest number of people, the general welfare will be greatly better off. Currently, the world is undergoing fast development and sharp change and every part of it has their own emergency and priority. In Africa, poverty and hunger are the most imperative problems needed to be solved; In Asian countries such as China and India, how to control their growing population and balance the economic growth as well as maintaining environmentally-friendly are the biggest challenges; In Middle East, getting rid of the shortage of water is privilege. In this situation, if scientists and researchers focus on developing new technologies to greatly enhance the productivity of grain output per area, inventing technics that increase industrial manufacturing efficiency without pollution or discovering new methods to extract edible water in dry areas, not only many lives will be saved but also the conditions everybody lives will be largely improved. Therefore, focusing on researches that are likely to benefit the greatest number of people really means a lot. However, there are collateral damge if all the researches being conducted are restricted in areas that have obvious advantage for the major population. Firstly, human’s understanding of the world will be constricted. For instance, if all the scientists and researchers in Africa are working on researches to improve grain output, the study and comprehension of other subjects such as astronomy and sociology will be lagged behind, which leads to an disintegrated view towards the world and in the long run, it will impede society’s development. Secondly, restriction on certain fields of study prohibit scientists and researches to express their true talents. Assume that a scientist is gifted and interested in physics, but he is forced to be a chemist because that doing chemistry is most beneficial to the greatest number of people. In this case, maybe the scientist can work out some fruitful result at the begnning, but in the long term, less and less contribution can be made as a result of interest fading away and lack of talents. Hence, other fields that those would possibly benefit the majority of people should be noticed too. Furthermore, some areas of reseaches appearing less benefial for the greatest number of people in the beggining may have unexpected contributions at last. Take the theory of relativity for an example. When Einstein firstly invented this theory, hardly anyone can truly understand it not to mention to benefit the greatest number of people. But with time going on, the principles in the theory of relativity are widely exploited and used as the basis and guidance in many branches of physics, such as optoelectrical detecting, laser operation and displaying technicals, to produce common screens, detectors and projectors, which undoubtedly benefits all the people around the world. If looking back, no one will ever know that the theory of relativity, which is so strange to people originally, can impose widespread infuence on general public. Thereby there are researches that won’t manifest its great advantages till the inspection of time. To sum up, while that for scientists and reseachers to focus reseaches on areas that are likely benefit the greatest number of people is necessary and conducive, there are drawbacks in the long run that ignoring them would render the recommendation counterproductive. Moreover, researches cannot be restricted in certain fields for another reason that though some researches may cannot help a lot at the beginning, they will bring about large merits to the greatest number of people eventually in the long term. |
