The male student ask the female student if the washing machines in her dorm are working well........so they mean the washing machines.

As far as I know ,the washing machines in my(the famale student)dorm. are working well,but you can use the machines in the Gym.

If you're talking about the "they are " in No.41 "As far as I know they are", I think wqhe2000 have explained it at 第11楼 .
