16. Some people believe that in order to be effective, political leaders must yield to public opinion and abandon principle for the sake of compromise. Others believethat the most essential quality of an effective leader is the ability to remain consistently committed to particular principles and objectives.
What is the most essential quality of an effective leader is a complex issue as different people hold their own opinions. Some people think that political leaders must yield to public opinion and abandon principles for the sake of compromise while others believe that leaders should remain consistently committed to particular principles and objectives. As far as I have concerned, I agree with the former statement that political leaders should put the claims of public into a more important position.
There are several reasons why I have the same opinion. Firstly and basically, the final purpose for political leaders is to guarantee the well-being of citizens and satisfy the public requirements. Leaders are put in their position to guide the society to prosperity. It is necessary to establish a government to reach the prosperity goal because citizens need a perfect guidance. People are more likely to grasp their own benefits. That is one of the factors to affect the comprehensive analysis to social problems. When facing social problems, different groups will hold different opinions and conflictions may even be aroused. The second reason is general people don't have the ability to solve complex social difficulties. Political leaders are well trained and have expertise to deal with those problems. Leaders are chosen to solve difficult social problems for whole society. In an other word, the first principle to measure the effectiveness of the political leaders is whether they satisfied the public. This principle is the basis of other principles. When other principles are oppose to it, they should be abandoned or yield for the compromise.
To illustrate that government should yield to public opinion, here's an example that is very persuasive. In recent years, prices of house seem soaring up without limit in China. As the claim of over burden on house is louder and louder, "house slaves" has become a popular slang term, especially in younger generation. Most of employees could afford the down payment of a small house sized in dozens of square meters after working in five to ten years. The spell of option payments is long as several decades. What's more, the estate agents keep raising the price to get excessive profits. The extensive claims got the answer from government by publishing several policies to control the house price. Like limiting the quantity of house purchase in order to avoid the speculating on real estate, and provide economically affordable housing for low-income populations. This method prevents the worse consequences like unstable society happen.
Another example is the flexibility of family planning. In sixties and seventies, Chinese government encourages birth which leads to a result that the population of China explosive increased. In order to guarantee the far-reaching development, political leaders proclaimed to limit the number of birth. It is the traditional opinion to have a male infant to keep the genealogy. Nowadays, the policy has changed after the family planning worked effectively, government changed the policy as one family could have another baby if the first birth is female. This is a compelling example to illustrate the final purpose of measures published by political leaders is to serve the public. So political leaders could abandon principles for the sake of compromise to satisfy the whole society.
To sum up, it is necessary for political leaders be flexible, no matter yielding to public but also abandon particular principles and objectives, to satisfy the public, which is their responsibility. |
