89 Claim: Many problems of modern society cannot be solved by laws and the legal system.
Reason: Laws cannot change what is in people's hearts or minds.(180)
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim and the reason on which that claim is based.
思路:
（1）肯定claim,
（2）否定reason，
（3）即使reason本身成立，与claim的因果关系也不成立。
这样写就成了纯粹的同意或反对原观点，不是自己有个明确的主张，然后几个段落来做支持。不知道这样好不好。
正文
I agree with the claim that many problems are difficult to be solved by laws and legal systems in current society. However, the reason on which the claim is based is obviously fallacious considering that people’s mind and action could be influenced significantly by the laws. Also, granted that the reason could be true, the causal relationship between reason and claim could hardly be established, considering the coercive force of laws.
In modern society, many problems, especially when they are related to morality, could be difficult to be solved by laws. It is a huge challenge to make a balance between principle and people’s emotion. For example, could the laws rule that any forbidden drug be prohibited under any situation? From the aspect of principle, these drugs would bring imponderably negative effects to human society and are urgent to be prohibited. However, there indeed exist some special situations under which people demand these drugs from the concern of humanity. When patients are going through the affliction of decreases, the physicians might be reasonable to use some forbidden drugs to alleviate patients’ pain. From the aspect of emotion and humanity, these usages of forbidden drugs are understandable. Under the similar situations, the laws would indeed encounter difficulties.
However, it is unjustifiable to say that laws cannot change what is in people's hearts or minds. Admittedly, people’s intrinsic minds are difficult to be changed by anything in a short time. However, by constructingconstraints on people’s behaviors, laws indeed could influence people’s mind. This process of being influenced may be considerably long, but is sure to take place. For example, serious gender discrimination existed in ancient China. Women are low in social status and they could not acquire enough opportunities compared with men. However, the situation has altered significantly since the equality between sexes was supported by the charter. People gradually realize that people are born to be equal. Nowadays, Chinese women have been playing the equally important roles in family, companies and even government. To this point, laws could really influence people’s attitudes and minds in the long-term consideration.
Further, granted that people’s hearts and minds could not be changed by laws, we cannot deduce that laws lose effectiveness from this. After all, one important feature of laws is the coercive force on people’s behavior. Deterred by the punishments, people have to behave rationally even though they have intense will to do something against laws. For example, people should have to control his temper and avoid causing any injuries to others when they are extremely angry. Officials should resist to embezzlement even if they have fierce aspiration for money. That is exactly the coercive force of laws and the significance of it. Consequently, even thought people’s minds and hearts are not easy to be changed, laws could still make effective constraints on people’s daily behaviors.
In summary, not all problems could be solved by laws. However, this assertion cannot be due to that laws cannot change people’s minds. In fact, people’s minds can be influenced by laws form the long-term concern. Moreover, even if some people’s minds really cannot be changed, the laws can still constrict people’s behaviors by its coercive force.
