Issue 3. Educational institutions have a responsibility to dissuade students from pursuing fields of study in which they are unlikely to succeed.

As many political and economists scientists said, one of the most important characteristics of today's world is professionalization. Since the beginning of industrial revolution, people have become more and more professional in their own fields in the mass production. Our society therefore becomes integration with extremely complex consumers-producers structure. As the reflection of the needs of society, our schools, from universities to vocational school, take the mission which wants educational institutes to shape more and more graduates with specialties. So, gradually, instead of persuading discovering yourself by making attempts in different fields, educational institutions advise students to go to fields they are good at in and leave the ones in which they are unlikely to succeed. I concede this opinion has its rationality; however, I have to say that more specific situations should be taken account of and should not be sentenced as a whole.

Admittedly, educational institutions have the responsibility to dissuade students from some fields that they are going too far. For example, if many students want to solve extremely difficult math problems such as Goldbach Conjecture or Fermat theorem, or if many students want to do a lot religious mediation though their student career, then from the utilization of human resources, it is surely a waste. These students can devote to other fields which are more meaningful and useful to the society, such as environmental science, new energy or information industry. In this point of view, prevent students from the fields in which they are unlikely to succeed is correct their mistakes.

Aside from the situation listed above, however, I am afraid that the situation is much more complex when this opinion is taken as a guide into action. It is a vague opinion that disguises the essence of the problem: from what criterion can we use to decide a field in that a student is unlikely to succeed? In the fields of science and technology, the change is so fast that the development can hardly be estimated; maybe the fields recognized as impossible things can be realized tomorrow. In the fields of social science, the experience from trying in different fields, no matter success or fails is also treasures for the future politicians, economists or social activists. So, it is understandable that no matter in the fields of science and technology or the fields of social science, many successful people does not determine the exact fields of research until graduation. They move from fields to fields in order to find their favorite ones. This situation leads that dissuade students from fields in which they are not likely to succeed be a block for many students to find their favorites.

So, we can say that the speaker's opinion has its rationality but cannot be treated as an absolute form or rules to implement. The school should take different actions considering that the situation can be various. For the fields that go too far, it is school's responsibility to dissuade students from those fields. For some regular fields, which maybe are just not very suitable for particular students, the educational institutions should present their opinions to students and leave the right of choice to the students. It should be believed that the students have the ability to make the right choice.
