好久没写作文了……发现手生了。这篇写得很折翼，我觉得逻辑好弱啊。乱哄哄的。我主要想表达：
1. the achievements of rulers可以带来the welfare of its people
2. scientists 可以从某方面说明一个国家的伟大
3. artists可以从某方面说明一个国家的伟大

When asked about what make a nation great, I will answer that the welfare of its people will do, however, more importantly, the spirit that the people has, which is contributed largely by the scientists and artists.
By further analyzing the welfare of the people, it is easy to notice that education and job opportunities, medical insurance, stable price level etc. are what matters most to the public. However, this largely relies on a wise political leader. If the whole nation is a ship, then the leader is absolutely the captain who navigates the ship to the right direction, thus guarantee the welfare of all its passengers. Thus, what the ruler can achieve, to a large extent, decides what kind of welfare the people can obtain, thus defines how great this nation is.
Sometimes, it is astounding that the political leader can shape the whole nation so dramatically that the policies can influence on economy, politics and culture extensively. For example, Roosevelt in 1930s almost reshaped the American economic outlook with government interference on economy. His contribution, which turns out, gave the whole nation a new life. Similar examples are Martin Luther King and Nelson Mendela, who improved the Black’s status through restless campaign and fights. Thus, the achievement of the rulers are the most important contributors to improving the welfare of its people, to shape the nation’s identity and to extend far-fetching influence on the generations afterwards.
If the achievements of its rulers focus on solving the extant problems, scientists give us hope on tomorrow. Great breakthough in scientific area not only marks the nation’s ability on research and creativity, but also, the ability to turn imagination into action. Indeed, the first nation taps on the molecule biology, the first on quantum mechanics and the first on cloning technology actually leads the rest of human society into a higher level of cognizance, of defining who we are and how the world exists. I define greatness as those who leads the rest to explore, think and act, thus the achievements of the country’s scientists can be a great marker on the greatness of the nation.
As for the achievements on arts, especially on literature, they are a mechanics for the self-awakening of its people. I admire China as a great nation even during the time people are starving and struggling under war at the first half of 20th century, because outstanding writers as Lu Xun kept calling on the public to fight for their motherland, and a sense of independence and freedom. A nation is great because its people never give up their hope for claiming their own rights.
In a nutshell, the welfare of a nation’s people relies in the achievement of its rulers and what the artists and scientists achieved can contribute to the greatness of a nation through leading the trends and calling on the public to claim their own rights. Therefore, for a nation to thrive, the sense of civil awareness and ability to think and act of its people should be the focus of national education. |
