题目:Universities should require every student to take a variety of courses outside the student's field of study?
There is no denying that a variety of knowledge from different fields could be of great use to students. However, should school require all students to student courses out of their own fields? Hardly could I agree with this and this is not feasible.
To begin with, as we all know, many subjects have a relationship with other ones and knowledge coming from different fields shares something in common. If students enter courses out of their major, they could combine knowledge in other fields and theirs to think and solve a question. And they are able to know different aspect of considering a problem. This would contribute to a more whole and comprehensive structure of reflection and studying. For example, the design of helicopter was inspired by knowledge of biology, the creation of breaststroke was also coming from a good understand of frog. The prototype of one method which I apply into target tracking is a model of Bayes in economy. All of these things indicate that subjects out of the major field could lend you a hand when you are doing research sometimes.
However, this requirement is hard to carry out not only for the university and for the students. The funds for a university are limited which should be used in the research, campus construction and many other aspects. Thus, how much money would be left for a university to establish so many courses and to hire so many teachers? So hardly could a school afford to implement this requirement. Furthermore, this requirement is also not feasible for students. There are only four years for students in their college and it is difficult for some of them to be excellent with their own major, thus how could they spare much time to study courses out of other fields? Besides, study is a way to form one kind of interest for students and thus no one will be willing to take courses he or she do not like under a force of the university, and this would restrict theirpersonality and strong points. They may just study with a perfunctory attitude and have a glance of variety of fields instead of be proficient in their major.
Therefore, this requirement is not so wisdom but the university, I advise, had better change their policy on this thing. They could provide a basic introduction of different subjects for students and open up some popular courses of variety fields for students to choose freely in their first year. If so, it would not take students much time to have a comprehensive system of knowledge but could help them finding their most interest fields. And in the two later years, the school should encourage students spend much more time on their own major but little time on other secondary ones which they are also interested in. And then students could develop better.
In conclusion, learning courses from other fields could be useful sometimes and the school ought to encourage students to give a glance of various subjects at the beginning of university. But then, the university had better require their students focus on their majors.
