1.  eople’s behavior is largely determined by forces not of their own.
Outline:
Position:
Environment will influence people and force them to do something against their will. However, the most important factor that determines behavior of people is their own mentality.
Positive:
1. Laws, society, school, family, friends’ factors.
2. Be forced to become a person which suits the world best, instead of following their own will.
3. owerful functions regarding to the regulation of people’s behavior
4. Environment orient people’s behavior in all ages. Era of war --> fighting, economical recession, emigrant, dressing style.
Negative:
1. If their will is strong enough, they will do what they want most of the time.
2. Bad people do bad things, regardless of the limitations.
3. Lots of people followed their own making and get succeed. Bill Gates, Allen Iverson, Liu Xiang, Jeremy Lin.
4. Most behaviors are determined by people’s deep thought.
5. eople want a peaceful life thus they fighting for it, dressing stylish.
The speaker says behaviors of human beings are fundamentally determined by the environment and are out of their control. Admittedly, as the products of society, people influenced by surrounding substances.
One’s actions are deeply influenced by laws, societies, schools, families and other exterior forces. The laws will limit humans’ behaviors, and people will make sure they conform to the rules so that they can live a better life. Societies, schools, families and friends can affect humans’ morality, ideology and behaviors. Things around people can force them to do something never happened before. Bill Gates would not have established his Microsoft Empire without the emergence of the computer.
Meanwhile, the forces have powerful functions regarding to the regulation of people’s behavior. Environmental factors orient people’s behavior of all ages. When people are living in the era of war, they will fight with other nations; economical recession, acting like others to retrench their money; emigration, imitating others aimlessly. The environment has its powerful methods to force people do some things whom may be against their own opinions. Can these factors attest the environment determining more than people’s own beliefs? I support the idea; however, that individual responsibility exists and functions as a significant role to influence people’s behaviors.
If people have a strong will, they will not be easily led by the environment, thus determining their behaviors. For example bad people will ignore the limitations and still do bad things, no matter the consequences; they just like to go against the rules. There are always some people are not willing to obey the rules.
There are still other kinds of people who do good things and succeed, like Bill Gates, who insisted that the computer may be useful when people in that era only knew the enormous machine. He dropped out from Harvard to chase his dream. And after a series of challenges, he finally succeeded and become the most famous person in the world. Before Allen Iverson, it is inconceivable for a 6-feet tall player to achieve as many goals as him, the MVP in the official season, the MVP in all-star game, the point scoring champion and so on. Before he got all of these achievements, he was regarded as a person who just needed to offer 10 points and 8 assists per game. He, however, kept practicing and become one of the most successful player in NBA and famous all over the world. It was difficult for the media to regard Liu Xiang, an Asian, as a champion candidate before he got the gold in Athens Olympics. Liu converted those suspicions into inspirations and kept practicing every day, finally becoming the first man to retain the world record in men’s 110-hurdle race.
Because of strong conviction, these people become the most successful individuals in their fields. Because of strong conviction, they overcame a lot of challenges and finally arrived at their goals. Most behaviors in their lives are determined by themselves other than the environment nearby, Bill’s father wanted him to be a lawyer; people around Allen suspect him all the time; nobody believed an Oriental can set the record in the men’s 110m-hurdle before Liu Xiang made it.
People during the era of war were fighting because they want a peaceful life, and they fought because of their own will, no one forced them to fight against other nations. When they were troubled by the economic recession, they trenched their money because people are eager to make more money. Emigrating suggested people are eager to absorb something new and enrich themselves, therefore imitating others because people are willing to but forced by the environment.
Thus, the most important factor to determine human behavior depends on them, and if their conviction is strong enough. Admittedly, not everyone can follow the ideas deep in their hearth and the environment easily affects some. The conclusion, however, should be an antithesis against the claim that people can determine their behavior solely on their own. |
