178 The 21st century has begun. What changes do you think this new century will bring? Use examples and details in your answer.
The exciting 20th Century just passed. We witnessed a tremendous change during the past a hundred years. In light of the fast developing science and technology today, there is every reason to believe that the change in the 21st century will be even bigger. Among countless areas, three of them require particular mention because development in these areas may be more drastic and influential. These areas are: digital science, biological technology and space exploration.
Revolution in the digital field is just a continuation of the revolution that began at the end of the previous century. It has changed the way of our life a lot already. Things such as computer, internet, e-mail, PDA are all products of this revolution. Everything is going to be digitalized so that it can be stored and transferred in a faster and more efficient way. This revolution is going to be continued in the new century and all those digital equipments we are using are going to be smaller, lighter, faster and more efficient. Robot such as NS-5 in the movie <I, Robot> in my mind is sure to appear in the 21st century.
Ensuing the decoding of human DNA, biological technology has made a big progress at the end of the last century too. New developments about gene contributed largely to the invention of various kinds of new medicine. Crops were also meliorated using biological and genetic technology. But a complete change of human life is yet to come. With the more mature clone technology, a challenge to human moral conception will appear in the near future. I am strongly of the opinion that cloned people will be born in the 21st century legally or illegally. At least, millions of patients will benefit from organs produced using clone technology. Furthermore, people with meliorated or altered gene may appear too. Even wing man that is thought to exist only in legend may be just around you in some decades.
A Mars exploration plan was passed by the USA recently. It is for sure that in around 2010, man will land on Mars. It is not likely that we will encounter some horrible alien or Martian there, but the expedition may still have some astonishing discovery. Water may be found; Life of some sort may be proved to be present there; even ruins of some intelligent being may be discovered. Mars is just a start. It is hard to predict the speed of space exploration. It may well be that by the end of the 21st century people will have been dwelling on Mars and some satellites of Jupiter such as Europa and Ganymede and have flown to other stars nearby.
I just listed some most exciting areas of possible change. The true extend of the change in the 21st century is actually inconceivable. Let’s just wait and see.
