TOPIC: ISSUE36 - "The greatness ofindividuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by theircontemporaries." WORDS: 460 TIME: 00:40:00 DATE: 2012/9/10 23:33:46
Every single individual would benefit fromknowing some lessons from the history in the past years, concerning the successand failure of the historical events and figures contributes to the developmentof the cognition of the history and facilitates the progress of the society. When it comes to the issue of the criteria of greatness of some people inhistory, or furthermore, who is the most appropriate to determine whether thosepeople are critical at that time, people get into a controversy.
Since that it is a society of rapiddevelopment, the criteria and the further conclusion of one's greatness mightbe altered or even reversed stemming from the fast changing social values. Thejudgment is subject to the time and thus becomes easily varied. Given the morerational and scientific method they use, the people who live after thehistorical figures could offer a general assessment comprehensibly. Moreover,by taking more practice of the events in contemporary society, the role of thehistorical figures could be recognized thoroughly.
However, it seems biased by just takingtemporal factors into consideration. The crucial role of some heroes could bemeaningful only by judged by the people living at their time derived from thatthey are living in the same historical conditions and with the samedifficulties to overcome. The documents those contemporary people make use ofto evaluate the role of the historical figures might be incomplete if some ofthe documents were lost and destroyed in transportation. With the abovefactors, the estimation of the contemporary society and people might be lesslikely to be valid.
Nonetheless, it is always one-sided todetermine the greatness of some certain historical figures neither by contemporarypeople nor by the people living at their time. It could be comprehensiblyassessed that the role of the figures is great when combining the two sidestogether as a general. Since that there is not absolute right or wrong ofhistorical events, thus there is commeasurably no absolute greatness of thepeople who started or participated in the events. Common sense tells us thatdifferent criteria derived from the time would undoubtedly result in variedassessment. Taking Adolf Hitler as an example, it might be likely that he waswar criminal and fascist ostensibly who force thousands of refugee to flee fromtheir homeland , however, the war he started accelerated the progress of theindustries, more suprisingly, his talent in oration makes him highly respected.
In sum, though whether a historical figureis great or not still awaits discussion, I still cling to a belief that the contemporaryassessment is more accurate and convincible. Only by comprehending the methodscould the disadvantages be weakened and the advantages benefit thecomprehensive estimation of the historical figures.
