Critical judgment of work in any given field has little value unless it comes from someone who is an expert in that fields
I cannot agree with the speaker that in any fields the criticaljudgment has little value unless it comes from someone who is an expert in thatfield. In my view, whether the critical judgment is useless or not depends onthe fields we discuss. As for fields concerning nature science, I do believethat valuable critical judgment almost comes from experts because of theirexpert knowledge. And it may not be the case when it comes to fields concerningsocial science. Moreover, as for arts, all of the critical judgment seemsuseless.
First, when it comes to fields concerning nature science I agreewith the speaker that judgment in such fields has little value unless it comesfrom who is an expert. As we all know, nature science is always difficult forordinary people, even for experts who are not major in that field the knowledgeis still impenetrable. Hence, only the critical judgment from experts in thatfield can be useful for the scientist.
Then, as for fields about social science, the critical judgment thatcomes from a person who is not an expert in that field can still be advisablein that the social science concentrates on issues concerning the society sothat the response from the society can make sense for scientists in suchfields. For example, the voice from citizens can reflect the work frompoliticians or government; at most time, it is a failure for governments orpoliticians when its citizens are not pleasant with their work.
Finally, the critical judgment against the work of art seems to makeno sense whether it comes from experts in art or not because the spirit of artis free from standards so that it is unfair to judge a work of art as corrector not. And the artists always do not care about the critique at all since theyunderstand that there must be someone who does not like his works while someonelike them. Clearly, since there is no standard for judgment, all the judgmentof art is insignificant.
In sum, as the viewpoint above, when it come to nature science, Iagree with the speaker that only the judgment from expert can be valuable anduseful for scientists in such field. Nevertheless, as for social science namelypolitics, besides the judgment from the experts, that from society or citizensis still essential. Moreover, any critical judgment against work of art seemsmeaningless since there is no standard at all and there is no right and wrongin the realm of art. |
