Issue 140 : Some people believe that universities should require every student to take a variety of courses outside the student's field of study. Others belive that universities should not force students to take any courses other than those that will help prepare them for jobs in their chosen field.
According the statement, the author maintains that some people believe that colleges should require their students to take a variety of courses outside their own field, and the rest group of people hold the position that apart from the courses about their jobs, universities should not compel students to take any other courses. In my point of view, our students should focus on our core curriculum and also take some other fields of courses to broaden their horizon.
As a threshold matter, the author's claim does have some merited advantages, listed as following. The first benefit by doing so is that some students' major are inter-discipline one, such as the biochemistry, which involves both the biology and chemistry. So they have to study both fields of courses. If they just focus on the chemistry or biology ignoring another subject, no success will come with them. The second advantages is that by studying variety of different courses, students will definitely broaden their horizon, expand their spectrum of knowledge, all these are benefit for their future career development. The last merit I want to mention is that by learning variety of courses, we will have a better understanding of our society and world, regarding how it works, especially studying some philosophy and literature courses.
However, there are some aspects should be taken into consideration before we fully support our students to study variety courses, along with problems, which might outweigh the benefits. The first caution is that universities had better to suggest and advise our students to select the outside courses instead of compelling and force, because some students do not interest in other fields at all, even resist to learn other fields' courses, so compelling may cause counterproductive effect. Another problem is that students should not focus too much on other fields of courses, the reason is that too many irrelevant courses may distract their attention and energy which should put on their major core courses at first.
As our society quickly advanced technology and development,. Only the well rounded people may pose the advantage position. If we want to excel out, taking a variety of courses is necessary. Meanwhile we should always remind our students that if they just dabbling the hodge-podge courses we learn without focus on any one, we will become a dilettante at end, lacking enough specialized professional knowledge and skills to resolve the problem and to offer some valuable suggestions. On the other hand, if we unduly put our attention on our own major about our jobs, not to learn other fields of courses, we may lose the core competitiveness in the present advanced develop society.
In the final analysis, one student should pursue a balanced education experience, that is to say, taking a variety of outside areas courses as well as focusing on their own major also necessary, striving to excel in a single area at best.
