This articleconcludes that to improve instruction for all languages and also save money, their university should hire non-native speakers as language instructorsinstead of trying to find and recruit native speakers. Although this argument might seem logical at first glance, I find thisargument is rife with holes and assumptions, andthus, unconvincing in several respects.
For example, the arguer assumes that the students who were studying beginning Russia gavehigher course-evaluation ratings would necessarily have a high score in laterlearning. Although this is entirelypossible, the arguer offers no evidence to substantiate this crucialassumption. It is very likely that the non-native speakers might onlyunderstand the most simple part of Russian. There is nodoubt that the teachers are good at teaching themhow to explain Russian andmake students get high marks. Anappropriate example is not very far to seek. Now a lot of schools have many high score students but always withlow-ability. The arguer’s reasoning isdefinitely flawed unless the arguer can convince me that these and otherpossible scenarios are unlikely.
In the second place, the arguer maintainsthat thenon-native speakers learned Russian later in life themselves, so they have abetter understanding of how to teach the language effectively. Nevertheless, there is no guarantee that itis necessarily the case, and the arguer does not supply any evidence to confirmthis assumption. It is quite possible that those non-native speakers knowthe teaching ideas of Russia, unfortunately they are not good at interpretationof another language. To illustrate thispoint clearly, let’s take a look at the following representative example. Toenhance the teaching quality of Russian, the invited non-native teachers must bespecialized in Russian language. The non-nativespeakers who teach better in Russian is not certainly good at other language’steaching, however, they may require higher wages, so hiring non-nativeinstructors may not be better than native teachers to improve instruction forall languages and in this way the school cannot save money as well. Without accounting for and ruling outthese and other alternative explanations, the arguer cannot bolsterrecommendation.
The last butnot the least important, even if the evidence turns out to support theforegoing assumptions, the arguer just simply assumes that the non-native speakerslearned Russian later in life themselves, so they have a better understandingof how to teach a variety of languages effectively, and neither any conclusive scientific evidence nor any anecdotalevidence is provided to affirm this assumption. It is reasonable to doubt thatwhat the arguer assumes will not happen in reality. It is just as possible thatthe requirements are more stringent if the students are taught bynon-native speakers. Meanwhile, in order to strengthen their mastery ofknowledge, those students stay after class under a lot of jobs which results inachieving higher score than that taught by native speakers. To reach the cite conclusion, the arguermust explain either why none of these alternatives is available or why none ofthem is able to sustain.

To sum up, the arguer’s argument mentionedabove is not based on valid evidence or sound reasoning, neither of which isdispensable for a conclusive argument. In order to draw a better conclusion, the arguer should reason more convincingly, cite some evidence that is morepersuasive, and take every possible consideration into account.
