小弟第一次写,求拍砖,不胜感激。
In this argument, the author concludes that Palean baskets could be made by non-Palean cultures. As evidence, the arguer points out a " alean" basket discovered in Lithos, which is geographical isolated to Palean village. At first sight, the arguer's argument seems to be convincing. After thinking carefully, however, suffering from some logical flaws and lacking of more accurate information we cannot make sure this argument is cogent.
Firstly, the author indicates no Palean boats have been found. But there is not evidence. Maybe the Palean people had boats. The boats could be decomposed in the soil after thousands of years, or be flushed to the sea, or have not founded by recent people. Furthermore, the Lithos people from the other side of the Brim River, would cross the Brim River by Lithos boats to Palea village to take the Palean basket. And the author did not mention whether there was bridge on the Brim River.
Additionally, even if the Palean people and Lithos people did not have boats, it does not mean the Palean people could not cross the river in that times. The author assumes that the Brim River, which is deep and broad recently, was so deep and abroad that only by boat Palean people could crossed this river in prehistoric times when Palean people lived. But there is not any evidences to prove this. Maybe in prehistoric times, the Brim River was shallow and narrow that Palean people could cross it without boat, on foot or by swimming. Or even the Brim River was formed after this basket arrived Lithos village.
Finally, the arguer did not consider any other path Palean baskets could travel to Lithos village. For example, the basket could float to Lithos themselves, or Palean people could take a detour form the source of the Brim River which was little creeks. Even the basket was not arrived Lithos by Palean or Lithos people, but later merchants.
In summary, this argument is based on a very narrow evidences. To make the argument more convincing, some more information with regard to Palean people, Lithos people and this basket should be provided to answer whether there was any other path to cross the Brim River, and whether other method could bring the basket to Lithos. Given these relative evidences, the argument would have been more logically acceptable. |
