The best way for a society to prepare its young people for leadership in government, industry, or other fields is by instilling in them a sense of cooperation, not competition.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim. In developing and supporting your position, be sure to address the most compelling reasons and/or examples that could be used to challenge your position.
The importance of cooperation and competition has been in hot-list those days. Some people claims that as a successful leader, one should have a sense of cooperation instead of competition. Accordingly, they ask the educator to instill in youngsters the importance of cooperation. However, I think both senses are equally important and we should not ignore any of them.
The concept of “Together Everyone Achieve More” itself emphasizes the importance of cooperation. It calls for learning to get along with other, understanding and respecting each other, and focusing on the things we have in common and tolerating the difference. The spirit of cooperation is an important character of a leader. For example, a large amount of significant advances in the fields of science are largely due to the cooperation of scientists and researchers. They need to share the experimental data and results in order to further their studies. A case in point is the success of spacecraft development of America. This scientific feast is not because any particular leader of a research group but because all the researchers’ contribution. Another example is playing basketball in teams. How could the top player of a team lead his team member to win without team spirit? The importance of cooperation could also be applied in designing a car, building a road and so on.
However, society is composed by individuals and competition serves as the driving force of each one to perfect. Desire for excellence and recognition, competition forests one’s enthusiasm and pulses to spurn one to work hard. Consequently, instilling young people a sense of competition would prepare them to survive in the society. In an industry, competition is the best regulation of the marketplace. In order to survive during the competition, a business leader should have a sense of crisis and try to improve his products and service continually. In politics, as a political leader, he should make endeavor for dominance, trying to provide more beneficial policies that could attract the more votes.
Accordingly, both the senses of cooperation and competition are important characters required as a leader of a group. Any society which may attention to frost the leadership of youngsters should not focus on one aspect and neglect the other. On the contrary, a qualified leader should combine both kinds of spirit. On the one hand, a leader who is obsessive with competition may cause harm to his organization and drain valuable resources and energy. A case in point is the arm race between United Stated and Soviet Union during the Cold War. Governmental leaders of the two countries launched arm race and focused on winning at any cost. As a result, Soviet Union was adversely influenced and it also precipitated its collapse. On the other hand, a leader who addresses the cooperation in his organization without competition may generate laziness, weakening the efficiency of the group he is leading. Consequently, a better approach should be that while cherishing and instill the sprite of cooperation and sharing in the education of young leaders, we should also value competition. |
