It's suggested by the author that the best way to truly educate the students is to require them to take various courses besides their major field.Such recommendation is effective in some conditions, while in other situations,in my view, may be not.
There is no doubt that in some particular courses, mainly interdisciplinary ones,it is required to learn the knowledges besides their own majors if students want to do them well.Take the course biochemistry for example.Apart from some knowledges about how DNA or different proteins work, students also have to be familiar with something to do with the organic chemistry,by which can they thoroughly understand the relationship between the structure of a particular protein with its distinct function.
Moreover, with some knowledges from other fields,it will benefit the employment. As we all know, the knowledge is increasing exponentially nowadays, which contributes to make it tougher to find a job.If you and your rival are competing for a job relative to your major, and you two have no difference in your own fields, but you know something about management, while he doesn't,you can have more chance to be chosen.
Admittedly, taking the courses outside students' major can also cause disadvantage.Through learning the knowledge from other fields,we can't overlook that it will distract their attention, which will impact on the study of their own majors.Such condition can occur that the comprehending of the knowledges from other majors is at the expense of an unthorough understanding of the knowledges in their own fields, which is counterproductive to its primary aim.
What is even worse, for some students have had difficulties to learn the courses in their majors well, compelling them to take more courses from other fields can do no good to them. They me be dismayed by the so-large amount of courses, and lose the confidence to carry on,inclining to give up.As the essence of education is to foster young people to grow into a responsible citizens who can do contributions to the society, such consequence obviously contravene this requirement.
In sum, while learning knowledge besides students' majors can make them more educated,it can also do harm to them in some conditions. So,in my mind,it should not be an obligatory requirement that everyone should take the courses besides their own fields, but an optional recommendation may be better. In such case, some students who have spare time can choose to take different courses to enrich their minds, and some students who have difficulties in the study of their own majors don't need to apprehend whether they can catch up but engross themselves in own fields, which can assure all the students have been truly educated.
