Educators should base their assessment of students' learning not on students' grasp of facts but on the ability to explain the ideas, trends, and concepts that those facts illustrate.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the recommendation and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, describe specific circumstances in which adopting the recommendation would or would not be advantageous and explain how these examples shape your position.
Should educators base their assessment of students' learning just one the ability to explain the ideas, trends, concepts that facts illustrate, as the statement contends? Although I agree with the speaker's broad assertion that the ability to explain the ideas, trends, and concepts is very important, the statement fails to consider the disadvantages of this assessment method.
Admittedly, the assessment method based on the ability to explain the ideas, trend, and concepts would be beneficial in several respects. First of all, this assessment method not only helps students to construct the capability of comprehending and interpreting the existing things, but also helps them be confident when they face something they don't know in the future. One apt illustration of this point involves the culture's study. If the teachers just attach more importance to the specific culture's origin, history and background and teach noting about how to analyze the cultures and the meanings behind cultures, the students may be confused when they faced another cultures. In addition, considering that facts are so dull for students, the assessment method based on the ability to explain the ideas, trends, and concepts can intrinsic students’ motivation. Ideally, students should want to study the subject for its own seek or for the sense of accomplishment in learning something new. Underscore the ability to explain the world around us can help them find some interesting thing behind the factors and surely intrinsic their motivation.
But the speaker's assertion is troubling in two respects as well. First, Students use what they learned to make a living in the future. Only by reciting lots of facts and concepts, can they possess the capacity to turn the knowledge they have acquired to practical account. For instance, it is very hard to imagine that a person who cannot recite the multiplication table can do multiplicative calculation easily even if he or she knows the principle of it. Secondly, it is not beneficial for the standard test. It may cause some crucial problems just like corruption and the inequality chances to enter the college.
The optimal assessment method, in my view, is a balanced one that imposes the grasp of facts yet leaves the rest up to the ability to explain the ideas, trends, and concepts. On the one hand, overemphasizing the role of recite may diminish the enthusiasm for the students to learn the knowledge. On the other hand, just require students to have the ability to explain the ideas, trends, and concepts may impede the entirely understanding of the facts. So, the balanced assessment method may surely boost the effects of education.
In sum, the assessment method based on the grasp the facts and the assessment method based on the ability of explain the ideas, trends, and concepts are the two main method to assess the students' ability. If we can combine them, we can have a better assessment. |
