I basically agree with the claim one must study a society's major cities if he or she want to understand the most important characteristics of a society. Admittedly, the major cities, most of which have a long history and prosperous economy, to an extent can represent the important characteristics of a society, however, remote areas, the place in which most people live, are of crucial importance to study.

Indeed, the major cities can represent some important characteristics to an extent. Firstly, most of them have a long history, and if one want to study the characteristic of a society, studying its history is indespensable. Consider Beijing, the capital city of China. There are numerous places of historical interest, such as the imperial palace, the Summer Palace, representing the history of  feudal society as long as 3000 years old. By studying Beijing, you could learn the main history of China, then you would know how China develops from a feudal country to a strong developing country, thus, you could learn the pain that Chinese taking and the policies the government has implemented. Two, generally speaking, major cities are the central of national economy and culture. Studying them you can learn the latest economic policies the government implements. And often various cultures collect here. So you can learn the general national culture by studying them.

However, studying major cities is not enough. On one hand, with the globalization of the world, the major cities are becoming more and more similar. Consider Shanghai and New York. Both of them have numerous high-rise modern buildings and KFC and Starbucks cover everywhere. the national characteristics there are becoming less and less typical. On the other hand, if one want to study China, if he or she only study the major cities, such as Shanghai and Beijing, then he or she could draw a conclusion that China is a developed country and it has advanced economics. however, the fact is conversary.

Therefore, when we would study a society, studying its remote areas is also necessary. Still take China as an example. Most Chinese people live in the remote areas and still live in poverty. Only the average economic level can represent the society. Thus, if we want to have a comprehensive understanding of the economic of China, we should also study these remote areas and most people's living conditions. In addition, China has 56 ethnic groups, and among them 55 minority groups live in these remote areas, which have rich unique cultures. By studying these remote areas not only can we have a whole understanding of China's economic levels, but also we can learn that China is a muti-ethnic country and its various cultures, all of which are the most important characteristics of China. Therefore, if one wants to have a fair and objective understanding of a society, studying its remote areas is also needed.

Summed up, studying major cities and remote areas are of equal importance when we want to understand the most important characteristics of a society. Lacking one of them would conduce to a prejudice.

用china来举例有风险,现在美国反华情绪很高涨。。
