1. 雇主从年轻员工身上获益比从年长员工身上获益更多

in the fast-pacing today, employers benefit more from the energy from the younger employees than from the experience and wisdom of older employees.

The issue of whether employers will benefit more from younger employers or older ones is a complex and controversial topic. On the one hand, some people argue that younger employees are more energetic, on the other hand, others think that older employees gain more wisdom. However, I shall present argument in favoring the former statement and refuting the latter statement.

Firstly, younger employees are more dynamic. Since they are new-comers of the company, younger people tend to have the passion and curiosity to learn everything about the new working environment. Thus they will devote themselves more to work. By employing more younger workers, the employer can greatly enhance productivity of the company. Also, leaders can have access to know the interests of younger generations and make products that better meet the need of the market. For example, according to CNN news in 2005, LEGO toys company in Denmark hired more than 2000 new graduate students, doubling its rate of employers under the age of 25 to 32%. Since then, LEGO company have produced many new toys and regained its status in the toy manufacturing world.

Secondly, younger employees are apt to be more innovative, for they usually come up with new ideas. According to a survey conducted in 2011 by AISEF, companies which have more than 50% of employers under age 25 have 17% more patents than those not. For instance, when the second largest fast selling company, Uni-lever, wanted to create a new shampoo brand half a decade ago, a young man raised an idea of adding the concept of SPA to this shampoo. And thanks to his crazy idea, the new brand, LUX, has become one of the most successful shampoo brand in the world.

On the contrary, older employees often lack the courage to change. Following their “sophisticated” advice, employers will lose opportunities to advance its company and will gradually make the company less competitive.

To sum up, although older employees have more experience, employers will definitely benefit more from younger employees for the reasons discussed above. In order to better develop the company, employers should hire more young employees who are full of passion and adventurous spirit.

1. The following appeared as part of a memorandum from the loan department of the Frostbite National Bank:

“We should not approve the business loan application of the local group that wants to open a franchise outlet for the Kool Kone chain of ice cream parlors. Frostbite is known for its cold winters, and cold weather can mean slow ice cream sales. For example, even though Frostbite is a town of 10,000 people, it has only one ice cream spot—the Frigid Cow. Despite the lack of competition, the Frigid Cow’s net revenues fell by 10 percent last winter.”

In this argument, the author concludes that the bank should not provide loan to the new franchise outlet for the Kool Kone chain of ice cream parlors, because the shop is destined to fail. To support his conclusion, the author points out that Frostbite has cold winters which hamper ice cream sales. In addition, he also cites that the only ice cream spot in this city suffered a decline last year despite the lack of competition. At first glance, the author's argument appears to be somewhat convincing, but thorough examination reveals that the argument is problematic for several critical flaws as discussed below.

Firstly, the argument rests on a gratuitous assumption that the drop in Frigid Cow's net revenues is related to the unbearable cold winter in Frostbite. However, the assumption is questionable because the author provides no evidence to support this argument. It is likely that last winter, the Frigid Cow was found out of using harmful chemical ingredients in its ice cream in order to reduce its cost. It is also likely that the ice cream spot changed their initial staffs, and the new servers provide poor service to the customers. Any of these scenarios, if true, would show that the decline in the revenues is due to the company itself, and has nothing to do with the market. Therefore, this argument is unwarranted without ruling out such possibilities.

Secondly, the author commits a fallacy of casual oversimplification. The arguer recklessly assumes that since the Frigid Cow is the only ice cream site in Frostbite, there is no ice cream market in this city. However, the fact that the number of shops coincides with the weather doesn't necessarily prove that the former is caused by the latter. The author has obviously neglected the possiblity of other alternative facts. For example, the government of Frostbite used to monopolize ice cream sales but has now made new policies to encourage competition. In any case, the arguer has failed to demonstrate a logical connection between the number of shops and the lack of market.

Thirdly, the author has also commits an analogous fallacy. The argument rests on an assumption that the Kool Kone chain is analogous to the Frigid Cow in all aspects. There is however, no guarantee that this is the case. If the Kool Kone chain can get the loan to open an ice cream site in Frostbite, competition will emerge. And the two shops will advertise and improve their products in order to attract consumers. They will change the flavor of ice cream in order to better meet the need of the market. In this case, they will create many potential consumers and spur ice cream lovers to spend more. Thus it is difficult to predict that the opening of a new ice cream shop will surely lose money.

In conclusion, the argument is not well reasoned and therefore misleading because of the logical flaws discussed above. To strengthen and better assess the argument, we need more concrete and convincing evidence about the reasons of the revenue decline in Frigid Cow and more detailed information about the Kool Kore Chain. So that we can establish a conclusion whether to approve the business loan application of the ice cream parlor.
