4) Scandals are useful because they focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim. In developing and supporting your position, be sure to address the most compelling reasons and/or examples that could be used to challenge your position.

I partially agree with the claim "Scandals are useful because they focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could". Admittedly, the exposure of scandals could attachment importance to some facts that we once overlooked and help to put problems in perspective. However, excessive exposure of scandals would have a detrimental impact on people's cognition about things.

Indeed, focusing our attention on problems that we ever neglect, scandals is of use to some extent. Celebrities' scandals could make people realize people's being imperfect , as well as the severity of some problems. Consider Liu Xiaoqing, one of the most well-known actresses in China and the chairman of a media company. Twenty years ago she was accused of tax evasion and tax fraud. With the exposure of this news, all the Chinese were shocked. She was numerous people's idol, how could she evade taxes? However, so it is. It made people have a reconsideration of superstars' status in their heart. Moreover, people became aware of the seriousness of tax evasion and tax fraud among celebrities. As people paid more attention to those celebrities' achievements on the stage than something others beneath the stage, some illegal acts they perform were neglected more easily than ordinaries, thus, the phenomena of tax evasion and tax fraud was popular among those stars. Therefore, scandals are helpful to re-recognize people and problems.

However, too much attention to scandals could make us lose objectivity and impartiality while evaluating people or things. Two months ago, Li Yang, the creator of Crazy English and an excellent English educator in China, was exposed to have domestic violence to his wife, Kim Lee, an American women. With the exposure of this event, it lashed a crowd into anger and people changed their attitudes toward Li. Indeed it makes people realize the seriousness of domestic violence, now when it comes to Li Yang, numerous people would say: he is a violent people. And people seem to neglect his great contributions to the development of English education in China. Indeed he has faults, but he also has numerous achievements and contributions. Unfortunately, some people pay so much attention to scandals that they overlook one's contributions, thus their judgements tend to be tinctured with prejudice.

In addition, in order to be famous some people use scandals to create a hype, which has a detrimental impact on people's cognition, especially on the development of adolescents' psychological health. Take Luo Yufeng as an example, who became an celebrity by speculation. In 2009, she gained attention after passing out flyers in Shanghai seeking for a marriageable boyfriend, who was required to meet excessive requirements. Her overnight fame twists values of a great many of adolescents: if one want to be famous, he/she does not need take pain, he/she can make it just by some outrageous behaviours or words, which badly influences adolescents' development of psychological health.

Summed up,scandals are helpful to some extent, but by no means should we lose sight of the downsides that scandals conduce to. So it is highly suggested that we make a proper balance about scandals and train the ability of analysizing problem objectively.
