Essay 1. “In order to improve the quality of instructors at college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach.”
作者:邱林
The standard of teaching at either college or university level can vary enormously between different institutions. As a result, students can suffer if lectures or seminars are conducted by inexperienced faculty who have no or little practical experience of the subject they are teaching. Accordingly, it is proposed that instructors should be required to undergo work experience outside the academic arena in a profession which is directly linked to the courses they teach. From my perspective, this suggestion appears to bear the hallmarks of a commonsense approach to a widely accepted weakness of university teaching.
In the first place, for students to be successful in their chosen courses they need to benefit from as broad a range of experience as possible. Unfortunately, many lecturers proceed into academic teaching directly from university themselves. They are unlikely, therefore, to have gained sufficient hands-on experience which can only be obtained by practical workplace experience. Clearly, the workplace, in whatever profession, either medicine, law, accountancy, or any other, is the place where theory is put into practice. It cannot be disputed, for instance, that theory doesn’t expose mistakes, whereas the everyday working environment is the place where errors can be, and are made on a regular basis. Undoubtedly, the blunders made in our working lives are the essential ingredients required to build valuable experience. We learn from our faults and lapses, and we teach ourselves not to repeat those mistakes if we want to become the master of our individual careers. Obviously, if a college instructor has had no hands-on experience, he or she will have limited knowledge to pass onto the students. Those young inquisitive minds learning the theory of a profession often have a myriad of questions to which they require genuine, solid answers, which can only come from those with the appropriate and pertinent experience.
In the final analysis, there is no substitute for experience in any walk of life. A university, the seat of higher education, should be no exception. It is my belief that no lecturer should be allowed in the lecture hall without at least one or two years practical experience of the profession linked to their course. A theory-based teacher is like a hollow piece of wood, empty of the practical elements of the everyday workplace.
Essay 2 “How children are socialized today determines the destiny of society. Unfortunately, we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society.” 作者:邱林
The children of today are the society of tomorrow. So as our social order evolves and embraces the march of new technology, each generation of children becomes exposed to a new set of values. The post war children are now the ‘golden oldies’, and often look on in bewilderment at the gadget crazy childhood of the modern day youngster. Their days of learning to walk the path of life are as different as chalk and cheese. As a result, our society of tomorrow, our unknown destiny, is already being shaped by the inevitable events of today.
To begin with, today’s parents and grandparents never had the plusses or the perils of the Internet and mobile phone to contend with. Although having brought significant advantages to society, these hi-tech mediums of communication have major downsides which are inflicting massive change to our society. For instance, children are exposed to gratuitous violence, computer games and pornography at the mere click of a button. What are the long-term effects, the more mature of us ask? It’s beyond dispute that the pace of technological advances will influence our young in a significant manner. As a consequence, the age of innocence has all but disappeared before our eyes. Furthermore, most parents view education as the key to the path of riches and happiness. Unlike their parents, most children now begin their formal learning at kindergarten, while mum and dad both work to pay for all the good things in life. Outside school the kids are often in the care of others, or alone at home while the parents toil. What moral and social values are being eroded by this lack of human or parental care. Undoubtedly, many children are over indulged in, and free to experience an array of tempting bad habits. In Western countries, early teenage pregnancies are at epidemic levels.* V& i+ y) M9 u: p3 E
In conclusion, what we all want is for a fairer and more just society. Nevertheless, how to achieve that dream is the major challenge facing humanity. For today’s more mature generation, the path ahead looks fraught with perils as more and more of our young seem consumed with greed and the quick-fix happiness. However, it is clearly apparent that the pace of change within our current social order determines that tomorrow’s destiny is as much a mystery as it has ever been.
Essay 3.
“The arts (painting, music, literature) reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society.”
作者:邱林
The arts, in all its dominant forms, engages us as an uplifting experience. Whether painting, playing music, or devouring literature, man has learned to escape from the hectic pace of everyday life by connecting with the arts, not only as a means of entertainment, but also as a therapeutic tool. From an early age, indeed even before school, we are encouraged to develop a curiosity for the arts. All in all, art is a form of communication, which can tell a story, relay an emotion, reveal the unseen, portray the seen in a unique way.
In the first instance, music is perhaps the most popular art form. Music is defined as the form of art whose medium is sound, and is commonly known as the art which moves the soul. Music brings happiness to people, it calms people, and can even be used to correct neurological complications. Most notably, music is now used in hospitals to ease pain during labour, or surgery. However, music is most popularly used for entertainment. Here people react to it by dancing or singing alongside. Music heals the soul and makes people forget their worries. Also, music can be used to remind people of the past, or worries. Here we say music reminds people of memories, both good or bad. Particular songs are attributed to special moments or experiences in someone’s life.
Whereas music is the medium of sound, painting is the most significant visual art, which is best known for communicating a message to the viewer. The message communicated then affects how people think, or how people feel. For another thing, artists find relaxation and stimulation from painting, and their works often fascinate and captivate the viewer. Equally important, literature has played a vital role in the development of society. From the days of Shakespeare, the written word, either in narrative or poetic form, has contributed to the rich fabric of Western culture, and has often acted as the stimulus for revealing those otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of mankind.
In summary, the various art forms which attract us have been, and remain treasured during our lifetimes. Clearly, the tranquil and enchanting role of the arts in society cannot be underestimated. |
