121.Some people claim that you can tell whether a nationis great by looking at the achievements of its rulers, artists, or scientists.Others argue that the surest indicator of a great nation is, in fact, thegeneral welfare of all its people.
Anation acts as awhole composed of part of its rulers, artists and scientists, who have most ofthe power to lead the society, and part of the rest of the people, who are themajority of the society. Controversy surrounds the question of whether thenation is great determined by the achievements of its leaders or the generalwelfare of its people. In my view, these two parts are both indispensable, forwithout any the society would stop functioning. First of all,the nation is directed most by the leaders, its politics by the rulers, cultureby the artists and military or technology development by the scientists. Theleader of the nation, like the head of a body, contains the most of its wisdomand decides for which direction the nation is heading. Whether the nation isgreat is partly determined by whether the leader is great. For example, ChineseQin Dynasty is great for its large quantity of historical relics, like theGreat Wall, which is the grandeur of China even till today. People areastounding at the wisdom of that era. However, whether the nation is great isalso determined by whether the leader could take people’s willingness intoconsideration. Take the example of Qin Dynasty again. Admittedly, from theperspective of history, the era left much for us to admire its prosperity; nevertheless, for the people in that era, the anguish people were living in may be beyond ourimagination, even though the totalitarian emperor destroyed many culturalmaterials to make people callous and fatuous in their poor condition. However, people are another factor more important to determine how long the nation canexist. After all, the nation is mostly composed of people, each of which seemsto own little power. But it cannot be ignored that the support of people forthe government is decisive in the long river of history, for the aggregation oflittle power is marvelous to make protest to what they are opposite to. Forinstance, the regality of Qin Dynasty was eventually overturned by angrypeople, who were discontented and easily provoked to take the combats. Anotherexample is the movement which called for freedom and rights of Black peopletriggered by Martin Luther King, who were also one of the people. It can beseen that the power of people is strong enough to overwhelm the governance of anation’s leader. Therefore, a great nation should have leaders who areconsiderate to give general welfare to its people to maintain its governanceand the stability of the society. Both leaderand people of the nation are significant for building a great nation. Withoutleader, the nation would not know where to go and how to go; without people, the governance of the leader would get nowhere and the basis of the society isdevoid. Thus, the achievements of the nation’s leaders are certainly crucial, but whether the achievements are related to the people is also decisive to thegreatness of the nation. |
