(D)正确, 句子结构简洁; Eleanor Roosevelt作为after a career as First Lady的逻辑主语;符合逻辑, appoint使用符合习惯用法

对A的解释不太明白，能帮忙解答下吗？

比较中助动词的补出，必须与前面的动词相对应。前面没有出现过任何形式的be，定语从句动词是shattered，这里的had been补出不合理，可以用had done
除此之外，A这个结构很wordy，不如D简洁

这不合语法，要用Abigail Adams or Dolly Madison ever had shattered expectations

been后可以加 had been SHATTERING，但不合逻辑。

比较结构中，A do sth. more+adj.+ than B do, B后面的助动词的形式一定要和A后面的对应。如果A后面是to be那B后面也要是to be. A后面是情态动词如 can，那B后面也要跟can。三者不能相互混淆
