考前热身,每天写两篇调节状态。这一篇关于证据反驳顿了一下,超时了很多。看来的确需要经常练习才能提高啊!

[39] A recent sales study indicates that consumption of seafood dishes in Bay City restaurants has increased by 30 percent during the past five years. Yet there are no currently operating city restaurants whose specialty is seafood. Moreover, the majority of families in Bay City are two-income families, and a nationwide study has shown that such families eat significantly fewer home-cooked meals than they did a decade ago but at the same time express more concern about healthful eating. Therefore, the new Captain Seafood restaurant that specializes in seafood should be quite popular and profitable. [Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument.]

The speaker of this argument considers there is a profitable demand for seafood in bay City and therefore asserts that the new Captain Seafood restaurant specializing in seafood will be quite popular. After a careful scrutiny, the evidence provided by the writer is not enough for a sound conclusion, and therefore further proofs are required.

Firstly, the writer refers to a study showing a 30% increase on the consumption of seafood in Bay City in the past 5 years. Based on this, he tries to conclude that the demand for seafood in Bay City is increased, and maybe keep increasing. One questionable point is whether the increase in consumption of seafood can fully reflect the increase demand for it. This increase may be due to the boosting prosperity of the economy in Bay City, or just normal fluctuation of some commercial product. Also it could be that there was no seafood or little in Bay City, and the increase in the consumption was no more than an ephemeral try for one fresh thing but continuous preference on it. In the light of these issues, the writer should provide some evidence to guarantee a long-lasting interest of seafood of the people in Bay City.

Then, in order to further develop his argument to convince us that a restaurant specializing seafood is profitable, the writer states that no operating city restaurants manage a specialized seafood business. Are there any non operating city restaurants which specialize seafood? Maybe some small restaurants have started this business and won a good reputation. If this is the case, the Captain Seafood restaurant has to fight against these restaurants for a larger piece of cake of the limited market. Let alone the fierce competitions against the other restaurants managing a multi-dish food service. Therefore, the availability of managing a seafood specialized restaurant in Bay City should be further substantiated.

One more thing is the national study, which shows that 2-member families spend more time eating out and take better care of a healthy diet. Does this study necessarily prove the profitability of the seafood business in Bay City? Even though the families will spend more time eating outside, there is no proof that they prefer the seafood. Compared to other foods, seafood can be more expensive, therefore, maybe not the 1st choice of the people. Also, there is no evidence showing that the seafood is considered as the healthy food by the people. Rather, having too much seafood may reversely put too much burden on humans’ kidneys, therefore causing different health issues. So, how can we attain a conclusion that the specialized seafood business will be much profitable? Further evidence is needed to explain these questions.

In sum, the evidence provided by the writer cannot fully prove his point: (1) the increasing consumption of seafood cannot fully reflect an increasing demand of seafood; (2) potential restaurants specializing seafood could be there; (3) the uncertain possibility whether people will choose seafood as their 1st choice for dinner. Therefore, the writer better present evidence in detail to clarify these questionable points. Otherwise, the suggestion will remain untenable.

“This increase may be due to the boosting prosperity of the economy in Bay City, or just normal fluctuation of some commercial product.” 我觉得这句话的前半句是支持对于海鲜需求提高的观点的。
“Maybe some small restaurants have started this business and won a good reputation. If this is the case, the Captain Seafood restaurant has to fight against these restaurants for a larger piece of cake of the limited market.”
