The following appeared as part of an article in a magazine devoted to regional life. “Corporations should look to the city of Helios when seeking new business opportunities or a new location. Even in the recent recession, Helios’s unemployment rate was lower than the regional average. It is the industrial center of the region, and historically it has provided more than its share of the region’s manufacturing jobs. In addition, Helios is attempting to expand its economic base by attracting companies that focus on research and development of innovative technologies.”
The conclusion endorsed in this argument is that Helios is an ideal place for corporations to seek for business opportunities and new locations, and several evidences are offered in support of this conclusion. Firstly, the author contends that the unemployment rate is much lower in Helios than the regional average through the recent recession; moreover, he provides the reason that Helios is the industrial center of the region that provides more manufacturing jobs; besides, he assumes that the plan of expansion of Helios's economic base will attract more companies.
Convincing as the reasoning seems at the first glance, further reflection reveals that the conclusion is predicated on some dubious assumptions and biased evidences.
To begin with, the author contends that a much lower unemployment rate in Helios will equally lead to more business opportunities here. However, the author fails to provide any concrete evidences to demonstrate that business chance is correlated with unemployment rate. He ignores other possibilities that result in the unemployment rate here. For instance, the major industries in Helios are not affected by the economic downturn. Likewise, the government instantly carries out several measures to protect the city's major business.
Moreover, in this argument, the author only indicates that the unemployment rate of Helios is lower than the regional average. It is possible that the region where Helios locates is one of the most under-developed areas throughout the nation. If so, even Helios ranks the lowest unemployment rate in this region, job market here is still tough compared with other cities out of this region.
Besides, since the argument provides information that Helios is the industrial center of the region, high housing price and intense competition absolutely exist. However, for a newly settled company, with no familiar environment and frequently lack of cash, it is not wise to locate in such place. What’s more, because Helios is the industrial center, with out doubt, top industrial companies settle either their branches or headquarters here, thereby it is more difficult for new companies to seize the market share from those local corporations there.
Further, even though Helios is plan to expand the economic base, only company that focuses on research and development of technology innovations is needed. As a result, Helios is not a perfect place for any kinds of companies. For example, fashion shops and handy-made corporations are not suitable here.
According, the evidences that the author provide is not convincing as it stands, and it is imprudent for the author to claim that Helios is an ideal city for any companies seeking new opportunities and locations. |
