The mystery of yawning

According to conventional theory, yawning takes place when people are bored or sleepy and serves the function of increasing alertness by reversing, through deeper breathing, the drop in blood oxygen levels that are caused by the shallow breathing that accompanies lack of sleep or boredom. (1)Unfortunately, the few scientific investigations of yawning have failed to find any connection between how often someone yawns and how much sleep they have had or how tired they are. (2)About the closest any research has come to supporting the tiredness theory is to confirm that adults yawn more often on weekdays than at weekends, and that school children yawn more frequently in their first year at primary school than they do in kindergarten.

（1）中，the few：很少，几乎没有，后面fail to：失败，没能，那岂不是双重否定？表示肯定了？
（2）中，has和后面is的主语分别是什么？能不能帮忙分析一下结构？

个人觉得这个句子是这样的。according to conventioal theory, yawning takes place when people are bored or sleepy and serves the function of increasing alertness by reversing。可以看成一个整体。through deeper breathing, the drop in blood oxygen levels that are caused by the shallow breathing that accompanies lack of sleep or boredom，是另外一个整体。在第二个整体中有deeper breathing 和 shallow breathing的对比。shallow breathing 是被accompanies lack of sleep or boredom修饰的，第一个整体说，yawning takes place when people are bored or sleepy 也就是 the shallow breathing that accompanies lack of sleep or boredom。所以the shallow breathing that accompanies lack of sleep or boredom是increase the blood oxygen levels。
