知道这里不能选择E，因为which错误地指代了hormones，而不是前面的整个情况~~但是我想知道D中的they会不会有修饰歧义呢？为什么没有？

S+v+o, which s + v + o. 这里后面定语从句的s是不是和主句平行的?即代词指代主语?请指正

谈谈自己的想法~

我觉得选D最关键的原因还是在于or引导的平行结构：
cells either secreted hormones, in which case they were..., or conducted electrical impulses, in which case they were...
those two parts match too perfectly to be fallacious~
另外，个人认为they之所以指代cells而非hormones主要还是语义，毕竟hormones不是cells，所以通过语义判断，they指代cells没问题~
至于在in which case从句中they是否优先指代主句主语，我觉得应该是这样的，manhattan SC 5th中有说道代词的5大原则，其中最后一个“case”中有提到，不过书上的例句是从属关系的两个分句，而这里是主句和定语从句，不过应该是适用的，不太确定哈...

PS：在语义上我还是认为E也说的通诶...
