1. Please describe your relationship to the applicant, and describe the circumstances under which you have known the applicant. 请问“describe the circumstances under which you have known the applicant.” 这指的是什么意思啊 This is an easy one—they just want the recommender to say something at the beginning of his letter, like “I have known Mike for the past three years, and I have been his direct supervisor for this entire time.” You get the idea—do you work together? Are you his boss? Or a peer? How closely do you work together, etc. They just mean “describe how you know the person.” So don’t be confused!
2. In what areas does the applicant need improvement or growth? How would you describe the applicant’s insight into these areas? 这个“insight into these areas”又是什么意思?
What they are asking for, is whether the applicant realizes the areas in which he needs to improve. So if your recommender says that you aren’t good with details, they want to know if you realize this. Ideally, the recommender would be able to say, “The one weakness of Mike is the fact that he doesn’t have good attention to detail. But he knows this—we have spoken about it. And over the past three months, he has done a great job of improving this weakness. He has great insight into this weakness and he is doing all he can to correct it.” THAT would be insight—they want to know if you realize your weakness, and what you are doing to overcome it.
