When students graduate from their high school, all are confronted with probably the first essential choice in their lives: To attend college to gain a higher education, or to join the labor market andbegin to earn their own bread? Today, more and more students are choosing the former option, as college graduates do demostrate some advantages over high school ones. Generally speaking, college education would lead its graduate to a higher income, a more successful career path, and a more fulfilling life. Employers are often willing to pay more for a college graduate. Although in the first several months, a college graduate may be just as productive as one who only finishes his or her high schooleducation, employers are inclined to believe these more-educated employees'potential will be tapped soon in the near future, which is to lead the company'sproductivity to a high level. Most of the time, the belief turns out to be thefact, which in turn encourages employees to raise salary for these elite employees. For instance, P&G, a multi-national company which runs a Management Trainee program every year in campus recruitment, offers its new employees (who have newly left the college without any working experience) a starting monthly salary of 8000 RMB, a salary that outnumbers almost all the high school graduates with 4 years working experience in the city. College education also provides people with more opportunities in their career. Employers usually attach more importance to their college graduate employees and offer them more working opportunities, which help the employees to learn the essential knowledge of their jobs more quickly and comprehensively. Their growing working capability, in turn, enablethem to reach a higher platform in the career. The senior management of my company, for example, is entirely comprised by people who possess college diplomas, or even post-graduate ones. Moreover, college education benefits people not only physically but also mentally. Despite more than ten years education in primary and high school, the foundation of the value of a person is mainly established through his or her college days. By taking general education courses, one will have access to various kinds of knowledge, which help him or her to understand better about this complicated world. For example, although I majored in economics at university,I took series of courses in philosophy, from which I formed my basic viewtowards life and God, and help me make decisionsin my daily life even after I graduate. |
