Recently, the issue of whether governmentshould spend more money on internet access instead of public transportation hasaroused much controversy among people with different backgrounds andperspectives. Many of them argue that with the rapid development of economicsin China, people's desire for internet has approached tosome of a plateau, while others hold that without a comprehensive publictransportation system the city would get more congested. As far as I amconcerned, I would like to support the former. In the following paragraphs, Iwill present some reasons to substantiate my point of view.
To get a better understanding of whyinternet has becoming a necessity, we must take a close look at how peopleperform their daily activities. Employees have to depend on the internet toexchange their thoughts due to the extended size of modern companies. Collegestudents have to rely on the internet to look for magazines, papers, news in orderto accomplish a satisfactory essay. Even most of the time for relaxation hasbeen spent on computer games or SNS websites. Therefore, it is rather essentialand urgent for the government to consummate the infrastructure of Internet.
In addition to the argument above, a betterand perfect Internet access will reduce the demands for public transportationto some extent. According to a recent survey conducted by the Department ofManagement of Nanjing University, the number of people who work at home and submittheir results through the Internet has increased continuously since 2000.Undoubtedly, it's the usage of Internet that makes this situation possible.Since people are more likely to work at home, less people actually need the busto commute relatively. Moreover, the reduced number of buses means less gasexhausts, which is also conducive to the progressive energy crisis andenvironmental issues.
Superior as Internet access is, thesignificance of public transportation is by no means negligible. The ideal timewhen most citizens can achieve their job at home still has a long way to go.Majority of people are in the demand of public transportation to go to work. However, the merit of developing a comprehensive network carries much moreweight than that of improving public transportation.
To sum up, given the reasons discussedabove, which may sometimes intertwine to form an organic whole and thus becomemore persuasive, we can safely draw the conclusion that the government shoulddevote more funds to promote network accessibility. |
