do not put too much emphasis on math, unless you are going to MIT or stanfard. sorry to say that, I guess columbia is overvalued as a whole... They are damn empirical.

interesting... this is a new perspective since I've been browsing through the finance PhD forums and it seems math carries a lot of weight., aside from research experience, and RL. Could you tell me what you think is the most important factor then?

check the courses of the math master. I know a lot math master can take applied math courses in finance and econ. if that's the case, then go for it. stats would be more useful for empirical study. if your friend is interested in empirical study, then go for stat master applied econ, not considered
