In this argument,the author concludes that the Apogee Company should close down its field offices and conduct all its operations from a single location.In addition,the author reasons that when rhe Apogee Company had its all operations in one location,it was more profitble than it is today.Further more,he also insists that such centralization would improve profitability by cutting costs and helping the company maintain better supervision of all employees.At first glance,the author's argument appears to be somewhat convincing,but thorough examinations reveal that the augument is problematic for several critical flaws as discussed below.

In the first place,the author commits the fallacy of "all thing are equal".The author assumes that the background information remains the same at different time or different location.While he failed to provide more detailed informations to support his assumption.For instance,the exact location that is in a cost-low with rich material district may contribute more to the company's sucess.On the other hand,a great economic recession may destroy the global economic system and influence the company's new strategy.In other words,unless more informations the author can give,it is impossible to conclude that yesterday's "closing-down"strategy can be effective as it used to be.

In the second place,the author assumes that such centralization is the exclusive strategy to improve profitibility and there is no room for a middle ground.There is no envidence to show that such centralization is the best of the best especially in today's economic background.The author overlook to give more reasons about this only strategy.Common sense and observation tell us that centralization with some field offices in different locations might produce better results.

Last but not least,even if the company can improve its profitbility by cutting cost,the author based his claim  partly on the gratuitous assumption that the the saving costs can help the company maintain better supervision of all employees.However,wage may be one of the step for such companies to keep better employees,working environment and management system shouldn't be neglected.The author presents no envidence that supports ths assumption based above.

To sum up,this is a weak argument.The author fails to substantiate his claim that the Apogee Company should close down its field offices and conduct all its operations from a single location.The envidence cited abouve is too weal to lend strong support to what the author claims.To make the argument more convincing,the author would have to provide more concrete ecvidences to demonstrate the effectiveness of the strategy of centralization.In this way,this argument will be of great value.2008-10-29
