Well, the reason seems ridiculous, if you do live outside the US. If you live in NYC, then I can totally understand why he/she had such concern. I guess it wouldn't be a HUGE concern if it's not the ED round. Remember, you have to be really committed to the school in order to apply for it in ED. I guess you failed to make him/her to believe you were 110% sure about Columbia being your best beloved school. I mean, isn't that the type of students a school want to bring in in ED, comparing to 1st round?
fyyy, do you mind sharing with us, what did you tell the interviewer about which other schools you applied or planning to apply? I wonder if that had anything to do with the result.
Bring your head up! Be positive! Look at it as a great opportunity for practicing your interview skills. I'm sure you'll do much better for the other schools. Best of luck to you!
