[求助]BARRON test2 阅读一题!!

test2 第一篇,第4题,书P156

原文:the federal government created the Yukon Territory, administered by an appointed commissioner, in an affort to ward off the prospect of annexation to Alaska.

question:Why was the Yukon Territory created?

answer:To prevent Alaska from acquiring it.

annex: To incorporate (territory) into an existing political unit such as a country, state, county, or city.

annex是并入的意思,即前者并入后者。所以是YT并入Alaska.

acquire是获得的意思,即前者得到后者。

谢谢 GREVOCA

G同学好细心,我都没想到要去查英英字典

但我又查了一下剑桥词典,annex: to take possession of an area of land or a country, usually by force or without permission.

照这个解释的意思还是吞并啊?!

G查的是哪个词典?

哦,我查的是金山词霸上的美国传统词典。

这可怎么是好呢...

要是按照"吞并"的解法,这题还有其他解释么?!!

annex sth or annex to sth, that's the ambiguous part.

look, annex is a transitive verb, so "annex sth" has the direct meaning to engulf sth.

since
right now it is annex(or annexation) "to" sth and annex is a transitive
verb, the direct meaning must not be to engulf sth. so the object that
is going to be engulfed should be reversed. so "annexation to Alaska"
should be parallel to say "Alaska's annexation of sth" or "sth is
annxed to Alaska" or just "Alaska annex sth". the key point is annex is a transitive vert.

for instance, the word "consider" is a transitve verb. in term like  "consideration to me", apparently, i am not the not to be
"considered" or in this case "annexed". instead. the meaning should be
"i consider sth".  if i wanna say "i am considered", the prep "to" should be changed to "on", then it would be "consideration on me" and so "i am considered"

that's
my personal aspect, hard  to fully explain, btw, dont be stuck at one single point. move on`~that's what i alway do, move move move ononon~~~~

OK !  MOVE!!

谢谢cs1219还有GREVOCA!

这样说我可以理解,我对英文的感觉太不敏感了,这种细微的差异是我从来没有注意过的,而且我根本分不出来哪些是及物动词,哪些是不及物的,平时好象也不需要去考虑,怎么可以提高对英文的理解呢?!常阅读么??可是看那些newsweek什么的好无聊,看小说又没有长进...
