E选项代入：
In the mid-1920s the Hawthorne Works of the Western Electric Company was the scene of an intensive series of experiments to investigate what the effects changes in working conditions would have on workers' performance.
1.去掉the→to investigate (what *the effects) (changes in working conditions wouldhave on workers’ performance) 此处whateffects … performance都作investigate的宾语从句，其中what effects充当宾语从句中的宾语成分，因而如果还原宾语从句的语序就是： changes in working conditions would have (what effects)on workers’ performance
2.去掉what the→to investigate *what the effects(changes in working conditions would have) on workers’ performance 此处changes…作修饰effects的定语从句，当然最好changes前面再加个that引导词
3.加上are →to investigate (what are the effects (changes in working conditions would have) on workers’ performance )
此处whatare the effects ... on workers’ performance作investigate的宾语从句，what在宾语从句充当主语成分；changes…作修饰effects的定语从句，当然最好changes前面再加个that引导词
[size=13.3333px]所以1和3的区别就是what在宾语从句中充当主语还是宾语，这个点本人也思考了很久，还是要靠语感
