Frankly, UTD is not too good, in terms of their faculty research and student quality, you should have a realistic expectation, meaning that you might not be able to find a decent research school after graduation, at least you shouldn't count on it happening. That being said, it's not easy to transfer unless you have very good reasons. Out of these years, I've only seen very limited case of ppl actually transferring and moving up succcessfully, and in that case it's because of research interest, analytical versus empirical, rather than research strength.
