my $0.02: Not sure you mean MCK in the states or in China. Only based on my experience (not in MCK, but similar...) in the States, actually people here could be divided into two types (roughly): Industry (e.g. FSI, Health Care, etc.) Subject Matter Expert (SME) and Service Area SME (e.g. Marketing and Consumer Strategy, Corporate Strategy, etc.). Being a strong candidate for a top MC firm (for those from Industry), you might need either strong experience in a certain industry (which mean you stay in one industry domain for a long enough time to understand their rules for the game) OR strong domain knowledge in one specific area (for example, Health Care Strategy). But the above comments mainly apply only for Junior staff (Analyst -> Associate levels). For manager above level, you also should maintain a reasonable strong network in your area/industry.
