. 查了一下字典, debate about并没有错, 只是字典上面举例用的是debate about + 名词. 所以,我猜debate about 后面只能接名词, 不可以接whether从句, 要接whether从句,只能用debate (over) whether. 不知道我这样想对不对, 还请大家给些意见!

debate over和debate about 中debate是名词，争论

   debate sth 中这里的debate是动词

   这么看来，要是用动词就直接debate，最简洁。

   因此这里用debate about 错，因为geologists are still debating
