In your opinion, which source is more important? Why? People gain knowledge mainly through two channels: to learn it from books or to accumulate it through experience. Since both of the two sources have some advantages as well as a couple of defects, they are, in reality, complementary to each other. In general, knowledge obtained from books has a wider range than that comes from experience. Since printing was invented by our ancestors, knowlege has been passed down from one generation to another as well as transmitted from one to another among contemporary countries. For example, we today have the opportunity to learn about people and their cultures from millions of years ago by reading history books and we are also able to understand the customs of a nation who is living as far away from us as at the other end of the world by refering to an anthropologic magzine. Obviously, it's virtually imporssible for us to acquire these by experiencing all of them personally. Therefore, books, acting as one of the sources of knowledge, has indeed enlightened us to a large extent. In contrst, knowledge gained from experience is somewhat limited in terms of breadth. Moreover, books are relatively easy to get access to, while experience often requires more time, energy or money. A well-develped library, for instance, allows millions of books, magazines and journals containing a large amount of information in a variety of fields, which are always open to everyboby free of charge. Today, in addition, we can also link to numerous e-books on the Internet. Knowledge, carried by the vehicle of words, is almost available on our fingertips. However, knowledge that is obsorbed from books is not undoubtedly accurate or adequate but sometimes superfacial. Experience is what we rely on to test theories on paper and to learn better by applying them to practice. We can hardly understand or utilize the knowledge gained from reading profoundly without trying it out in reality. For example, if I have just completed reading a book on cooking, I am still not able to make palatable dishes, since I have never made one before. I should definitely have practiced the cooking methods several times before I would manage to prepare an acceptable meal. Similarly, I can manipulate a computer only after I have used it a couple of times besides reading a book on computer programming. In conclusion, books offer knowledge in a variety of fields and are relatively easy to obtain, while knowledge from experience is deeper and more practical. It will not work if we count solely on one of two sources to attain information.
