请教:xx times ....倍数的用法

xx times....的用法到底是什么?据说是....xx times more than.....
但语法885 sec15, 19中:
In one of the bloodest battles of the Civil war, fought at sharpsbug, Maryland, on September 17, 1862,four times as many Americans were killed as would later ne killed on the beaches of Normandy during D-Day.

这里..xx times as...as...也可以啊?是不是只有...xx times as many as....才正确,其他非数量的形容词都不行?糊涂了.

可我有清晰印象....xx times...只能跟more than.....比较级,且因此错过一道XDF题,只是现在一时想不起来是哪道题了,找到了一定跟贴.谢谢答复.
