ISSUE29求拍

“Too many people think only about getting results. The key to success, however, is to focus on the specific task at hand and not to worry about results.”

What do you think this piece of advice means, and do you think that it is, on the whole, worth following? Support your views with reasons and/or examples drawn from your own experience, observations, or reading.

On the one hand, a good result in the future is an impetus for a person who is working hard to pursue goals. As is known to all, the way to success is always hard and frustrating. Many people may feel tired and want to quit on the half way. If we are aware of the results we want to get and we have made an explicit plan to attain the results step by step, the satisfactory results may encourage us to keep trying. For example, Martin Luther King, a famous American anti-slavery activist, has met numerous obstacles in his struggle against social segregation and discrimination. What made him never give up? In an interview he said, "I sometimes feel disappoint and tired and ask what I am doing, but the image that a fair society without segregation in my mind encourages me to continue. The appealing result supports me to go ahead."

In addition, the reference to the result will make it clear what the primary task at present. It will enable people to make appropriate plan so that the working process operate in order. Suppose, for example, a person who only deals with things at hand without thinking about the meaning of doing so, how can he or her connect all the things that have been done to make contribution to the final success.

While on the other hand, laying emphasis on specific tasks at hand is also crucial to the access to success. An old story inherited from the ancient China serves as a fitting example. There was an ambitious young man who had lots of dreams. Everyday he lay on the bed and dreamed of his future success. But when other people ask him to do certain things, "I'll do it tomorrow" was always the answer. In the end, the young realized no dream and was regarded as a failure. The story tells us that no matter how many aims we have, we should begin from doing small things around us. The accumulation of tiny hard work will probably lead to the final success.

In sum, both the future results and the tasks at hand play important roles in one's approach to success. We need to find a balance between the energy we spend on tasks at hand and the time we use in planning for the future.
